Supporting Students Experiencing Homelessness

To better understand the needs of students experiencing homelessness and the ways California’s colleges can more effectively support them, the California Homeless Youth Project (CHYP) and the ACLU Foundations of California (ACLU) surveyed California’s college homeless liaisons. Staff from as many as 61% of California’s community colleges responded to the survey. This report details the responses of people working most closely with this student community and offers recommendations to improve practice.

Youngstown State University Housing Grant

Youngstown State in Ohio offers housing scholarships for students planning to live in campus housing or in the University Courtyard Apartments. Awards of $2,000 are given to full-time students based on need.
University of Kansas Student Housing Scholarships

The University of Kansas offers over 50 different scholarships to help students pay for campus housing. The school also has multiple scholarship halls, where students pay a lower rate in exchange for completing weekly duties around the hall, like cooking and cleaning.
Southern Scholarship Foundation

Through rent-free housing and cooperative living, Southern Scholarship Foundation supports students who lack financial resources, demonstrate excellent academic merit, and exemplify good character attend institutions of higher education. For more than 65 years, SSF has helped students achieve their dreams of attending their choice university through our partnerships at Florida Gulf Coast University, University of Florida, Santa Fe College, Florida State University, Flagler College – Tallahassee, Florida A&M University, and Tallahassee Community College. While SSF does not provide monetary-based scholarships, we offer rent-free homes located near our partner institutions. We currently have 25 homes statewide and serve 453 students.
Rebecca W. Watkin Scholarship Program

Students living in an EAH affordable housing unit can apply for this scholarship. The scholarship is not for housing but is geared toward those who need an affordable place to live as well as tuition assistance. The award is approximately $2,500 per year.
Western Michigan University Foundation Scholarship

Western Michigan University offers a full-ride scholarship to eligible students who are either homeless, in foster care or state custody, undocumented or eligible for the Federal Free or Reduced Price Lunch program.
David E. Ballard Scholarship

Established in the memory of David E. Ballard, with the support of the Living Legacy Foundation, this $10,000 scholarship supports youth who have experienced homelessness and/or been part of the foster care system pursuing a career in live entertainment. Field of study may include but is not limited to live event operations, production, music engineering, music business management, customer service, hospitality and/or other related fields.
