Supporting Students Experiencing Homelessness

To better understand the needs of students experiencing homelessness and the ways California’s colleges can more effectively support them, the California Homeless Youth Project (CHYP) and the ACLU Foundations of California (ACLU) surveyed California’s college homeless liaisons. Staff from as many as 61% of California’s community colleges responded to the survey. This report details the responses of people working most closely with this student community and offers recommendations to improve practice.
Basic Needs Center Toolkit

The primary purpose of the toolkit to assist California community college leaders, staff, and administrators with planning, implementing, and improving their basic needs centers and services. The focus of the toolkit is practical action steps, innovative practices, and research-supported strategies.
Students basis needs security at Massachusetts Public Colleges & Universities

Research shows that many students in Massachusetts experience hunger and/or homelessness, as well as other types of basic needs insecurity that can serve as barriers to degree completion. In 2019, the DHE developed partnerships with other state agencies, campuses, and community-based organizations to create innovative solutions to student housing insecurity. In December 2020, Commissioner Santiago charged members of a Basic Needs Security Advisory Committee to make policy recommendations on how to address growing economic insecurity among students.
NL Housing & Homeless Network

The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing and Homelessness Network works with regional Community Advisory Boards, front-line agencies, all levels of government, and other stakeholders to identify and address issues and challenges related to housing and homelessness in rural and remote communities across our province.

The National League of Cities has provided direct support to help cities work in partnership with their postsecondary institutions and community partners to remove barriers to basic needs such as food, housing, childcare, mental health services, transportation, or digital access for postsecondary students. NLC is working with local leaders to gain knowledge about their residents’ postsecondary completion challenges, identify specific basic needs to tackle and connect cities with their peers to share and refine approaches that hold promise in overcoming barriers to college completion.
