If youth or their families are struggling to meet some of their basic needs, YSB is there to help them feel safe and cared for. YSB’s Community and Housing Services are designed to provide food, shelter, safety, health services — and even a sense of belonging — for those who otherwise might go without.
National Housing Strategy: What is the strategy?

The National Housing Strategy is the largest and most ambitious federal housing program in Canadian history. Over the next decade, it will invest $115+ billion to build stronger communities and help Canadians across the country access a safe, affordable home. This includes more than $13 billion proposed through the 2020 Fall Economic Statement.

There is a growing body of research that supports Housing First. Of the 1,000 participants in the At Home/Chez Soi study, 80% of people who received Housing First services remained housed after the first year.
The Backstory: Developing the Prevention Program

While they continue to provide ongoing support to people in need, the new Prevention Program acts as an integral component to Saint John’s homeless serving system by reducing homeless inflow onto the By-Names List (BNL) and addressing the situational, episodic, or chronic challenges that result in homelessness. The program’s purpose is to maintain or improve people’s current living situations to keep them where they are instead of attempting to re-house them in an over-priced rental market.

Given early onset of mental disorders and the inadequate access to appropriate services, a meaningful service transformation, based on globally recognized principles, is necessary. The aim of this paper is to describe a national Canadian project designed to achieve transformation of mental health services.
